Can it live up to the hype?

For the record, though, I totally get why Burton didn’t include them. Also in the mix are the always excellent Ortega, Dafoe, Theroux and Bellucci, although he is completely lost here. Devito gives us a memorable cameo and Burn Gorman gives us a few scenes. Verdict Beetlejuice 2 is one of those sequels that people have been talking about for decades, including countless rumors, hoaxes, and even fan-made trailers, but I never expected it to happen. When the trailer came out, it was undeniably official and I was both excited and hesitant. See, I’m from the generation that saw the original movie when it came out and loved it, but I got the sequel 36 years later! Can the characters live up to it?

Well, the answer is very mixed

In three and a half decades, it made sense to be heavily nostalgic. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice surprised me with how little it did. Yes, there are nods here and there, yes, there are throwback scenes, and yes, there is a certain song that returns, but for the most part, they are really making a movie here for a new generation that probably hasn’t seen the original movie any more than Beetlejuice among fans and I personally didn’t appreciate it and thought it was a shocking choice. Along with the cast, Keaton as Beetlejuice didn’t have the same feel, I’m not sure if it was him or the script, but it wasn’t the endearing character we’ve come to love and know since the 80’s. Lidia? Ryder held her own and was fantastic, it was a great return. O’Hara was Delia again, but remember Delia is a very annoying character, right?

See, the plot is very tired and extremely generic

So all this screen time compared to the original film was definitely not good. Theroux was excellent, Ortega was brilliant, Dafoe was his usual crazy self and Bellucci…well, she was there. See, I love Bellucci, but in the end she was cast as the antagonist of the film, she’s barely on screen, she doesn’t do anything and even the swan song of the characters is rushed and frankly awful. I needed this nostalgia, I needed Beetlejuice, there isn’t much of it either. And when there are scenes of Beetlejuice, they are very lackluster.
